In the OR

Hi everyone-

Kai headed in for his Kasai surgery about noon (named after the doctor who invented it). The goal of the operation is to connect a piece of his intestine to his liver. The other end will join on to the rest of his intestine on it's normal pathway below the stomach. This will serve in place of his blocked bile ducts, which will be removed along with his gallbladder during the surgery. This sounds like science-fiction but is apparently somewhat routine. It is sad to kiss him goodbye for a few hours, but he is in good hands. His Virginia grandmother is here now, which is very nice for all of us. When he comes out, he'll still be on a respirator for a little while till the gas wears off. Other than that, we don't know a whole lot yet. It's nerve-wracking, but we are finding little things to keep us busy. Like updating our blog!
