Timeline

December 29, 2009

Kai was born at LDS hospital. He was quite stubborn about coming out. This helped us choose his name, because Kai seemed appropriate for someone who makes no compromises.

February 11, 2010

Granny Julia and Grandpa Bill are in town for a visit and notice Kai is looking jaundiced. He heads in to his physician the next day, and the medical mystery begins.

Febuary 23, 2010

Kai's probable diagnosis of biliary atresia (lack of a bile duct) is confimed at the start of surgery. They continue with an operation called a Kasai, which has a good chance to delay the need for a liver transplant for years or possibly indefinitely.

May 24, 2010

Three months after the surgery Kai's labs are out of whack. His bilirubin is up, and he looks yellow again to boot. He begins the procedure to get on the transplant list.

July 1, 2010

We learn Kai's dad Paul is a good match for living donation. This is welcome news since Kai hasn't gained an ounce since May.

July 15, 2010

Liver transplant day! Thankfully Kai's surgeons were able to squeeze him in about two weeks ahead of schedule. Lots of families before us have had a bumpy recovery initially, so we are taking it day by day and relishing good news when we hear it.
